HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
A long time ago, before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, the place now called Tandayag had no name.
Before the Spaniards and pirates came, the place was full of trees and other plants. Monkeys and other wild animals thrived in the forest and on the seashore. The native inhabitants in this place were Negritoes, in vernacular called “ Agta”. The people’s ways of living cnsisted f hunting, fishing and farming. They had bows and arrows as their tolls of hunting.
Before the Spaniards came there were pirates. Upon their arrival in the land, the Negritoes fled and hid by the bank of the river and the big slopes and some went up to the mountains. The pirates’ intention was not to hurt the people but to look for precious things. The captives were frightened because of their personalities.
The last group of pirates who came were successful because they were heavily armed and alert. Their boat was colorful with sail ( layag ) and cannons as their source of protection in case of troubles that they may encounter. But one most amazing thing they saw was very big snake ( sawa) living in the bank of the seashore. It was a harmless snake and was called “ Tanday”. The captain combined the name “ Tanday” with “ layag” and called the place “ Tandayag”.
Nowadays, Negritoes were no longer in Tandayag and almost all the people are educated. Some are professionals and most of the livelihood of Tandayag constituents are farming and fishing. Tandayag is progressive with kind-hearted inhabitants and were Christianized by the Spaniards who first stepped on the land.
The most popular activity in the barangay is the celebration of fiestas. Barangay Tandayag celebrates its annual fiesta every June 29 in honor of Saints Peter and Paul. Sitio Cooton also celebrates fiesta every March 15 and Upper Tandayag celebrates fiesta every April 18. Also, almost all Tandayaganons celebrate the annual town fiesta every November 30.
